Hoping to build your skills, use your spare time in a productive way and make some money? Then starting up a home based business is a great idea, it will allow you to do all of those things and who knows what kind of opportunities it could lead to. Here are a few things to consider when you’re getting started.

Decide on your business idea

The first thing you’ll need to do is work out what your company will be doing, you might have a general idea but it’s important to refine it. For example, if you know that you want to sell clothes, ask yourself what kind of clothes they will be? What style, what budget range, who will your target market be? All of these things will affect the way you present and go about things.

Find a space to work from and get rid of distractions

Have an area of your home that’s just for work- a spare bedroom with a desk and chair would do the job nicely. Once you sit in this space, you know it’s time for work and can get yourself into the right headspace. Working from home is great as you’re in your own cosy surroundings- however, on the downside the home can be filled with lots of distractions. Working in your home office which is away from the tv, snacks in the kitchen and even your pets can help you to stay focused.

Upgrade your equipment

Just because you’re running your business from home doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have the best equipment. A fast, reliable computer is essential since this is where most of your work will be done, you might also need things like a business phone system and a high quality printer. Don’t try and scrimp here as it could affect your productivity.

Outsource some help

There’s plenty of help out there that can make running a home business easier, and by outsourcing certain jobs you can focus your time on the things you’re good at and enjoy. For example, if you don’t know much about marketing then it makes sense that you’d hire a company to do this. If you want to run a business blog but don’t have the time to create weekly posts then it’s easy to outsource and find an experienced freelancer who can create content to your specifications. You could even look into a virtual reception to give a professional welcome to anyone contacting your business, and the phone isn’t just ringing off the hook during the times you’re not working.

Find the work/ life balance

One of the best things about working from home, for yourself is the flexibility you have. You can fit work in around your life and other commitments, however, for the most part it’s good to stick to a schedule so set your working hours. If you do need to change things around then you can do, but otherwise you’re in a good routine and getting things done when they need to be.
