Talk About It

If your elderly relative still has the mental capacity and understand then talk to them about what they want. Do they want to be close to a specific family member or place? Alternatively, are they hoping to have a private apartment?

It would be best if you also talked to other friends and relatives about your options. Getting a broad view of opinions and gather plenty of information about the nursing homes that match your needs.

Consider Yourself

This may seem selfish, but if you are arranging and covering some of the costs of the nursing home, then you will need to take yourself into the equation. Can you afford the monthly fee for the next X amount of years? If they want to go to a specific location, how often can you visit?

Call Around

When you finally have a list of what you think are the most suitable nursing homes. Start making phone calls. Before you do, ask about specific facilities. Although you might not need them right now, you may need them in the future.

Visits

After you have spoken to the nursing homes, you probably have a much clearer idea of the services offered and how they will apply to your elderly relative. Now it is time to arrange visits. It is much more advantageous to bring your elder relative with you so that they can get a feel for the place. When you arrive, you can look for a couple of things:

Ask as many questions as possible.

Signing

Before you sign any contracts, make sure that you have read them, and ask for a second opinion from a qualified lawyer. You should also make sure that you have a copy of the rules, their policies and procedures, and a copy of certifications too.

Take your time when choosing a nursing home. Each one has its own feel and community. It is essential that your elderly relative likes the place and the people too. Don’t be afraid to ask about smells, staff turnover and recent inspection results.
