Whether you’re someone who works in the challenges in operations management or a retail banker, you will have gained invaluable knowledge in your sector during your working life that others may find useful. With that in mind, you might want to consider starting a blog and here we are going to look at how you can do that and how to make some money doing so as well.

Getting Started

There are many things to consider when you first get started writing a blog, but one of the hardest ones is what you are going to write about. Now, as we have already discussed you’re looking to share your knowledge so we won’t spend too long discussion the topic. So, where do you need to start? Well, there are two things to take on board when you first get going, one is the name you are planning on choosing and the other is where you are going to be writing. The name should be catchy and relevant to you or your topic. We’ll leave that decision in your capable hands.

Where you are going to write is possibly the most important decision that you will make to start you off. You will need to choose a platform and the most popular of these is WordPress, which has over 80 million users. There are alternatives but WordPress is the leader in the field for good reason. However, there comes another decision that you will need to make with WordPress and that is whether or not you will be self-hosting or using their free service. If you host your blog yourself via WordPress then you can have the following:

  • Personalized domain name
  • Fewer Limits e.g. design, monetization
  • Owning your blog outright

Self-hosted means that you will need to come up with a domain name and find a hosting client, which means companies that will make your website live on the internet – companies like JustHost provide this service.

Making Money

Once you’ve got yourself set up and you start writing your blogs your aims should be to build up a following so that you can start to make some money through your words. Increasing traffic to your website is critical to the next steps of making money and can be done by doing some of the following:

  • Social Media – Engage with your chosen topic on social media. Search for hashtags that relate to your content and interact with it. You should make it clear on your profile that you have a blog and direct followers to it.
  • Guest Blogging – You should search out similar bloggers and build up a relationship with them. By inviting others to guest blog on your site you can share their users.

Monetizing your blogs can be done in a number of ways but the most straightforward is by allowing advertising on your site. Looks into Pay-Per-Click (PPC) and Cost-Per-Impression (CPC) are two options. The former means you get paid based on how many of your readers click on the advert and CPC means you get paid to host an advertisement based on your user levels, usually over 1000.
